Topics
Cirta Tooth offers educational sessions, tailored to your educational goals on a range of topics related to low vision and CVI. Some of the topics are listed below. This is not an exhaustive list and more topics will be added over time.
Alternatively, you can read about some of the topics in Cirta's blogs or in her publications
Low Vision
Cirta Tooth has developed her knowledge of Low Vision through her clinical experience, her projects during her undergraduate and post-graduate courses, through attending courses and conferences and, most importantly, from listening to her patients!
Introduction to Low Vision
Cirta Tooth has introduced many people to the concept of low vision: How it can be defined, who is affected and how patients can be supported. She has given presentations to patient groups (eg the local support groups from the macular society) and eye care professionals. She has provided clinic-based teaching to optometrists, ophthalmologists, general doctors, orthoptists and dispensing opticians. She has organised workshops for children in primary schools and she has provided individual tuition.
Certification and registration
Are you keen to understand the benefits of certification for sight impairment? Do you need to brush up on certification criteria or on the process of certification and registration? Cirta Tooth has given workshops with case discussions for ophthalmologists and for optical practices.
"Very engaging and informative"
"Good detailed explanations"
Emotional impact of sight impairment
Cirta Tooth has interviewed patients from the Macular Society to better understand the emotional impact of sight loss. She subsequently published 3 case stories in the Optician Magazine (see 'Publications' section on this website) and organised teaching sessions for optical professionals.
"Great to learn about the help and support that is available for the emotional aspect of low vision"
Brighter, bolder, bigger
Simple adaptations to the home, school and work environment can significantly impact everyday function for a person with a vision impairment.
Cerebral Vision Impairment (CVI)
Cirta Tooth created an information video ("Formal Lecture") about CVI for educational and eye care professionals as part of her Masters project. It was very well received and triggered an interest in some of her immediate colleagues to learn more about the topic and engage more with this important topic.
Childhood CVI
Workshops, presentations, individual teaching sessions and teaching on the job are good ways to learn more about CVI. Cirta Tooth has had many opportunities to raise awareness of this condition.
Dementia and CVI
Cirta Tooth triggered great discussions during a workshop about CVI in people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia in a group of nurses and consultants in community psychiatry, and again in an optical practice. Participants were familiar with visual hallucinations, but much less familiar with other aspects of visual perception and visual processing difficulties.
Stroke and CVI
Cirta Tooth is part of a stroke network within the NHS and had the opportunity to learn and teach about CVI related to stroke.
